Greetings friends,
Week 3 and 4 have been spent mainly in Lugazi where we have been preparing for future schools, making disciplines of local pastors and leaders, pouring love out on the children and adults associated with Faith Children's Home. We are praying that people here will enlarge the measure which they use to give themselves to God. He will always pour into each vessel the amount that they can hold. We are also praying that they will be able to carry His glory and not allow it to become common and lose the most precious treasure that one can ever have.
Linda has found that the children at Faith Children's Home thrive on love. She has tried to be with them everyday when possible. Saturday, the children were so excited when she arrived. They packed up and headed to a large field for a day of play and celebrating.
Several of the ladies also joined the group. We encountered a down pour on the way. Shelter was found under the eaves of a church building, where they sang praises to God and waited for the rain to stop. Since it is the rainy season, there is a short shower almost every day. When they arrived at the field, each one joined in a game of jump rope, soccer, or tug of war.
Children came from everywhere to join in the fun. Soon it seemed that there were hundreds of kids playing. It became a challenge to keep track of all the equipment. Everyone was smiling and laughing. After playing hard for a couple of hours, the group returned to the home. The children were served their very first peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. They were taking them apart and licking the jelly while Linda was busy taking snaps.
In Lugazi there are days when the city water is off. At the children's home on such days, the children take their Geri cans (large plastic canisters used for carrying water) and go to the well for water. One needs a lot of water for cooking, laundry, bathing, and cleaning for 44 children. Bill is in the process of having gutters placed to collect rain water which will run into two large tanks located on both sides of the home.
We are also having the latrines and shower rooms painted. We are purchasing trunks for each child to keep their personal things in. The sewing machine has arrived. The staff is learning how to use it. Linda found that it is very difficult to sew and work the foot peddle at the same time. The children will have lessons during their holiday times. We brought about 700 pounds of children's clothing. We are teaching them how to carefully repair some of their other clothes to be given to the neighbors or children in northern Uganda. We want the children to see how God has provided for them and how they in turn are responsible to bless others. The children are also receiving piano lessons. It is beautiful to go to the home and hear them practicing the keyboard.
Bill has been spending much of his time taking business trips into Kampala. A trip into Kampala can be an all day event due to traffic jams. Our NGO (nongovernment organization) papers should be completed soon. They wanted to be sure that Bill did not forget the facilitation fee. We laughed so hard. This is a term that we have not yet heard meaning "bribe". People here barter over prices for everything. We are overcharged on a consistent basis. Even when Linda goes to the local market, she takes one of her Uganda friends with her to get a fair price. God has blessed us with some really great friends.
A small team went to the hospital in Lugazi. We prayed in the maternity ward for women waiting to have their babies and for those that had already delivered their beautiful babies. One woman had a C section and her baby had died. We prayed for God to heal her heart. She and several others gave their lives to Jesus that day. They came upon a one day old child struggling for breath. The baby had received intravenous instead of oxygen. It was obvious that the child's lungs had not developed fully. A doctor and nurse came running. The baby was taken away, and tears ran down Linda's face as she cried out to God for healing. The young mother was outside sitting on the grass. She was fearful that she would not see her baby again. Pastor Joel prayed with her for comfort.
In Lugazi, there is a mosque where the Muslims pray. The call to prayer sounds loudly throughout the city. There are also Hindu shines in the city. Bill has strong words for the Ugandan Christians who shun these groups of people. He is teaching them that love breaks the power of the enemy. We have friends in both of these groups who are being drawn to Jesus "slowly by slowly." We went on a double date with a dear Indian couple, to the Nile River falls. They are watching our lives and would have us for dinner every night if we were free. They are seeing an example of a Christian marriage and the power of God in the lives of those who put their trust in Him.
We appreciate your continued prayer for us and the beautiful people of Africa. We are becoming more Ugandan every day.
Love,
Pastor Bill and Linda Campbell
